Motivation Pitfalls
April 24, 2014
Shannon Clark recently published a fitness article on Lifehack.org titled 5 Things That Crush Your Motivation, these relate to many different things. Strong motivation is essential to reach any goal. Regardless of what your motivation is (money, reputation, health, family) it’s important to recognize it and use it as your most powerful tool.
As important as it is to recognize your motivation it’s just as important to recognize things that may hinder your motivation.
Here are the 3 that really stood out to me:
Expecting Perfection. Also expecting quick results. Often when trying to reach a goal people get discouraged when results take longer than expected or the results aren’t on the par for which they had hoped. When this happens, reassess your goals and maybe alter them. If you don’t hit your goal maybe change your plan and gradually work your way up to where you want to be.
Not learning from previous mistakes. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If you continue doing what isn’t working, you won’t ever reach your goal. Learn from your mistakes and adjust the plan.
Neglecting Rest. Rest is extremely important in any aspect. Be it letting your body rest and getting enough sleep, or letting your mind rest and stepping away from the project at hand and letting yourself re-evaluate. Often the best new ideas come from the outside when someone takes a step back and comes back with a refreshed mind.
